Perfect Porridge

This is the perfect porridge for camping, tramping, skiing, or at home. To make it seriously smooth soak the mixed ingredients overnight. Use fresh milk if available to replace water and milk powder.

Ingredients (for two)

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • salt to taste
  • 2¼ cups water
  • ½ cup full milk powder

Increase ingredients proportionally for larger batches

  • mix dry ingredients fully in a saucepan
  • add water, soak if possible, overnight is good
  • heat slowly, stirring until it simmers
  • simmer gently and stir over a low heat gently for 3 minutes
(To help with the cleaning, ensure the saucepan is filled with cold water immediately after serving)

  • Brown sugar and milk or cream
  • Fruit and yoghurt
  • Bananas and cinnamon
  • Honey
  • Icecream

  • 1 part porridge to 2¼ parts water
  • 1 part milk powder to 4 parts water

Tramping

Increase the recipe up to double the recipe for tramping, and add salt to taste. Add Cranberry sprinkles, brown sugar (20-30gm per person per day), dried fruit (30-40gm per person per day).
