- mix dry ingredients in a large bowl
- melt butter with malt and treacle or golden syrup
- run liquid into dry ingredients
- mix in the warmed treacle or golden syrup
- add enough water or milk to make a softish dough
- roll out and cut into squares, or rounds 6 to 8 cm in diameter and slightly more than ½ cm thick
- bake in a moderately slow oven (160°C) for 30 to 40 minutes until a very pale brown
