IngressIngress is an augmented-reality massively multiplayer online location-based game created by Niantic(approve sites), Inc. and first released on 15 November 2012. Ingress has a complex science fiction back story, although this is not necessary for playing and enjoying the game. Gameplay consists of capturing "portals" at places of cultural significance, such as public art, landmarks, monuments, etc., and linking them to create virtual triangular "control fields" over geographical areas. Progress in the game is measured by the number of "mind units" captured via such control fields. Gameplay relies on players physically moving about the community in order to interact with portals. The "Scanner" is a mobile app used to play the game, augmented by a web based "Intel" map. Players, or "Agents", belong to one of two completing factions, Enlightenment and Resistance. Players have an "agent name", and earn action points (AP), earn badges, and complete missions to "level up" commencing at level 1 and working their way up to level 16.[1]
